LAWRENCE HARVEYcontact: lawrence.harvey@rmit.edu.au Project Involvement Memory Games Information Spaces Future Sound City Sounds Citysounds 2.0 - ADR Australian Research Council (ARC) - Grants SSCAD Fermata LivingLab 01 : Vertigo In 2003, Lawrence Harvey was appointed to the position of Lecturer in the recently established SIAL Sound Studios. His practice involves the research and production of large-scale electroacoustic works for concerts and installations, and the development of new pedagogical techniques for sound based studies in architecture. As a composer and sound designer, he has worked collaboratively on projects in music, theatre, dance and virtual reality, mostly using spatial sound systems. His recent teaching work has involved the application of emerging games technologies for teaching architecture students soundscape studies. He is a founding member of Metraform, an interdiscplinary research group investigating the use of VR technologies for complex visual and aural spatial experience. >Metraform presented Symbiosis in the 2001 Melbourne International Film Festival, and this year completed a commission from the Digital Media Fund of Film Victoria to produced Ecstasis: Human Presence in Digital Environments. The interactive 8 channel soundscape design for Ecstasis was completed in MAX/MSP in which continual modulation of three layers of sound is a feature of the acoustic environment that envelopes the 3D graphics of this group interactive experience. In 2002 he worked with David Pledger and nyid to produce the soundscape for “K”, which premiered in the Melbourne Festival that year, and later toured to the 2003 Vienna Festwochen. Another MSP environment was used to create a flexible interactive system for managing and playing banks of sound files, closely integrated to the script and stage cues over a 12 speaker system. His curatorial projects include The Reflective Space, (1996) a series of ten electroacoustic concerts in Melbourne produced by Contemporary Music Events and the Sound and Contemporary Music Series (1997-98) for the Next Wave Festival. This programme consisted of 15 concerts, sound installations, and other events produced via a partnership between the Next Wave Festival, the Australian National Academy of Music, ABC Classic FM, the National Sound and Film Archive and the Goethe Institut. He has also directed concerts for the 1996 and 2002 Computer Music Conferences, and Island and Canopies for the 2003 Acoustic Ecology Conference in Melbourne. Other works include L'image du feu dans l'eau (1996) for percussion quartet and 4 channel tape, eX (1997) for double bass, electronics and tape, FlightPaths: radiophonic, (1998) with berni m janssen, waiting (1998) for DW'98 with choreography by Sandy Parker, The Occupation of Space: Sound Sites, (1999) an exhibition of 24 acoustic moments created from interviews with sight impaired individuals to determine how they negotiate space by aural means, hearth (1999) texts by berni m janssen and Canopies, chimerical acoustic environments (2000) for the Southgate promenade. Following undergraduate studies at the Canberra School of Music, he completed a Master of Music (Composition), at the University of Melbourne, and the 8 month course at Les Ateliers UPIC (now CCMIX) in Paris. He is currently undertaking a PhD in the School of Architecture and Design at RMIT University researching spatial sound design.
