Rory is currently undertaking a PhD titled Strategies for Managing Complexity in Architecture as part of the Embedded Practice Research programme, supervised by Mark Burry and Andrew Maher. Rory is ‘embedded’ in the small Melbourne based design practice, BKK Architects, where he had worked as a designer for a number of years prior to beginning his PhD. Rory's new role in the practice mainly consists of developing design strategies for particular projects or problems using scripting, parametric design and digital fabrication. Images of many of these projects appear on the right of this page.
Teaching
Rory teaches undergraduate design and communications, including the Strange Procedures Rhino Scripting elective in the RMIT Architecture faculty. Rory also frequently sits on design studio review panels in the RMIT Architecture and Fashion schools.
Media
Rory is the producer of The Architects, a weekly radio discussion show about "architecture, buildings and stuff", hosted by Stuart Harrison and Simon Knott on Triple R, broadcast on 102.7 FM in Melbourne or streaming. Along with assisting in the organization and sporadically hosting entire shows, Rory presents the news and what’s on segments every week. Rory has conducted interviews with many local and international architects and designers including Peter Cook, Yung Ho Chang, Giulio Cappellini, Esther Charlesworth, Kees Kaan, Cassandra Fahey, John Denton, Lars Spuybroek, Teddy Cruz, Deyan Sudjic, Eames Demetrios, Ian MacDougall, Tom Daniell and Alain de Botton.
