In this studio participants will be asked to read a classic dystopic novel (Orwell’s 1984 or Huxley’s Brave New World), make a complete list of all the objects they own, and utilise game environments as a new form of architectural design media.

Specific issues dealt with in the studio are:

  • The art of the database.
  • The design of spaces that investigate concepts of open and closed
  • space, and relating them to contemporary social, political and technological conditions.
  • Ideas of threshold and transition between physical and imaginary territories.
  • Use of narrative to inform architectural and interior design - the temporal dimension of story and experience.
  • Exposure to the issues of game environments as a design media.
