Studio Statement:

Can we define a person by what they own? Do you define yourself by the objects that surround you? Taking its lead from Bruce Sterling’s book ‘Shaping Things’ MySpimes explores the future spaces of objects, and considers the role of the spatial designer with the onset of intelligent and omnipresent objects that are continuously located in space and time.

In this studio participants were asked to make a complete list of all the objects that they owned! Then this list of objects was categorised and then used as a design generator for a space within a game engine. In the final project participants worked in groups to create a space to exhibit all 6542 owned by the studio in a mixture of real and imagery spaces that related to Melbourne’s urban fabric.

Specific issues dealt with in the studio were:

  • The art of the database.
  • The design of spaces that investigate concepts of open and closed space, and relating them to contemporary social, political, and technological conditions.
  • Ideas of threshold and transition between physical and imaginary territories.
  • Use of narrative to inform architectural and interior design - the temporal dimension of story and experience.
  • Exposure to the issues of game environments as a design media.
