Hugh Whitehead (Foster & Partners) discusses the practice's 'trade-off sliders' idea. As I understand it, this slide was used to illustrate how parametric thinking (in the broader sense, not just as geometric modelling) has influenced the way they approach their projects. It's basically about establishing parametric interdependencies between different aspects of a project. For example when the 'sculptural' slider goes up, so does 'structure', which in turn pulls 'cost' up. conversely, if there is a large budget, you can set that one high first and see how much you can move the other ones...

Gregg Pasquarelli (Shop) discusses their design for the upgrade to their existing Rector St bridge at Ground Zero in New York. They are working with builders of lightweight racing skiffs to create a canopy structure of high-tech composite materials which is then infilled with large inflated EFTE pillows.
