Studio Presentation
This studio was run in Semester 2, 2006. The final combined studio presentation can be downloaded here (56MB Flash file).

Outline
‘StrangerthanFiction’ focuses on the investigation of tectonics and the relationship of architectural components and details to the building as a whole. How does the part inform the whole? The main project for the studio is the design of a small to medium scale documentary film library for the Jean Painlevé collection (film, books and artifacts) on a waterside site in Melbourne docklands. The dual themes of immersive reading(s) and sub aquatic environments provide the evocative and qualitative leads for developing an expressive architecture, considering in some detail the tectonic qualities, assembly of the building and use of materials.

In preparation for this project there is a preliminary series of assignments of ascending scale and complexity to explore model-making as a design medium, investigate library as an architectural idea and consider the relationship of detail to the whole.

In the course of this studio, students initially work individually and later in groups to increase the opportunity for detailed exploration and modeling.

The skills focus is on physical and digital modeling and relationship of these two. Students  have an opportunity to experience a range of techniques and learn to use several modeling software packages. Specifically they  are introduced to the developing software Generative Components (which supports associative geometry) as a generative tool and a way to create flexible digital models that can, for instance, populate a space with variable instances of a component model. They also learn appropriate techniques for producing two dimensional drawings directly from three dimensional models.
